mlb update?
once again, i'm avoiding the use of punctuation. ten quick things about the baseball trade deadline, though.
1) if the nationals don't get a top prospect in return for soriano, they're not very smart. he's one of the top ten players in the game right now, and any team that gets him is making the playoffs. remember, that dude can still totally play second base.
2) the white sox need to get it in their heads that the central is for real. they're the best team in that division, but their rotation is now only the third-best, so they need to get the rest of that stuff in gear.
3) without carlos zambrano, the cubs would be the worst team in baseball. with carlos zambrano, they still suck.
4) proof that moneyball works: A's OBP: .325; Opponent's OBP: .337
whatever. why the a's are winning is beyond me. if they trade barry zito, oakland might disown the franchise forever.
5) this is important; this is the one nice paragraph i'll have about the reds all year. look, they screwed up trading for those two nationals guys. but give that gm credit for getting eddie guardado for the most reasonable price of any good reliever available on the market. what a steal. if he had made that trade three weeks later, he would have ended up doing something like trading odalis perez for elmer dessens, which is just silly. also, kudos to brandon phillips. letting this guy go was quite the rare mistake by the indians, who are my personal pick for the best evaluators of hitting talent in the major leagues.
6) the phillies should not be close to the worst team in the nl east, but somehow they are. why is that? well, it might have something to do with the fact that they decided not to sign an impact starting pitcher this year. honestly, did you think brett myers was the pick to click?
on a side note, brett myers is the guy that caused me to sort of give up auto collecting. when i was 17, jason and i waited for a long time after a bats game to get his auto. he signed for us and proceeded to harass some little girl (who was like 7) about getting a baseball signed for her dad. now, her dad was going to sell it and was right there, but there was no need for that. after that day, i decided that it was only a matter of time before i got cussed out by a professional athlete, and so i just stopped going to get autos regularly.
plus, i could never recognize people i haven't met.
7) somebody should try to trade for carlos lee.
8) the only way the devil rays are going to get better is to continue to fleece teams out of top pitching prospects.
my guess is that somebody will bite on carl crawford in the offseason. oh, and delmon young is hitting like .338 in durham.
9) the orioles are screwed for a long time by being in the al east, being in camden yards, and by not having any starting pitching.
10) go twins.
